2013 Casino Gala

The November 23, 2013 fundraising Casino Gala was a great success.  This annual event is held in honor of all of the children who have fought or have a brain tumor diagnosis. The evening included many activities: buffet dinner, casino games, silent auction, dancing, and open-bar.  The casino was packed with supporters playing blackjack and craps.  The auction included some great items that drew competitive bids.  Special thanks to all of our event supporters and sponsors: Whittles Physical Therapy, Herson's Honda, the Kelley Bula Memorial Scholarship, and anonymous Hero sponsors.  Thanks to the Giant Flying Turtles,  dedicated longstanding casino dealers, and all of our loyal volunteers.  We look forward to our 20th anniversary event and will post updates regarding location, date, and other details.

2013 Family Retreat Day

CBTF welcomed families to the annual Family Retreat Day at Glen Echo Park, Glen Echo, Maryland on Sunday June 23 for a fun-filled day that offered families a time to come together to enjoy fellowship, activities, and family fun.

Once again, outstanding volunteers provided arts and crafts for the kids while parents attended information and support group sessions.  Elizabeth Wells, MD, Neurologist, Children’s National Medical Center provided vital information in a session entitled, Pediatric Neurologic Sequelae of Brain Tumors: Update on Research and Management in the morning and support groups explored Surviving and Thriving After a Brain Tumor with Katarina Steacey, NP from George Washington University Hospital and brain tumor survivors, Navigating  Brain Tumor Treatment:  How can we Make it a Better Journey?, Debbie Lafond, and Love, Laughter, and Remembering Dealing with Grief and Loss with Debbie Lafond  and Phil Carpenter in the afternoon. In 2008, Amy Boyle’s friends, (age 12) formed Amy’s Amigos in tribute to their friend Amy Boyle, a classmate that was battling a brain tumor.  Amy was a high spirited young lady that was athletic and enjoyed life.  In 2011 after Amy’s death, Amy’s Amigos held their first Reston Youth League Triathlon in the hope that funds raised would support important research initiatives.  On May 12, 2013, the Be AMYazing event was held at South lakes High School and was met with the same enthusiasm and was sold out ahead of the event date! Amy’s friends with the support of the community has raised $32,000 over the past three years. This year $16,000 was raised!

CBTF and families thank AMYazing, Reston Youth Triathlon, sponsors, and supporters of this exciting event!

On May 17, Dwellus Group gave back to the community again and hosted their 4th Annual Dwellus Charity Golf Tournament on behalf of the Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation and in honor of Jackson! The event was held at the Pleasant Valley Golf Course, Chantilly Virginia and was a great success, raising over $9,000.  Sponsors included, Chick-fil-A, First Savings Mortgage, Champion Title, George Mason Mortgage, LLX, Keller Williams Realty, Thadson Flooring, 123 Junk, Cindy Zook Associates, Finding Solutions Counseling Centers, Alliant, and HMS Home Warranty.  A continental breakfast, lunch, goodie bags, silent auction, and raffles were included as part of the day.  It was a beautiful day and the efforts of everyone involved were greatly appreciated.  Special thanks to Ryan Zook and the Dwellus Group!

Run with the Saints

This year, in the US, over 13,000 people will die from brain, spinal cord, or other nervous system tumors. Many of these victims are young children. Aggressive research supported by the Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation is helping to reduce this tragic number.

In 1999, a vibrant and talented sixth-grade student at John Paul II Catholic School in Houston, Texas was taken by this disease. Lauren Lockard’s family, friends and faculty have vowed to fight this disease while keeping Lauren’s memory alive through a spirited community event. Continuing this promise, on Saturday, November 2nd, 2013, John Paul II Catholic School and the friends and family of Lauren Lockard will be holding the 15th Annual Run with the Saints Lauren Lockard Memorial 5K Run. Proceeds from this event will directly benefit the Childhood Brain Tumor Foundation and the John Paul II athletic program, which was very important to Lauren.

Run with the Saints is one of the few races run in West Harris County, Texas! The 5K course winds through the beautiful tree-lined neighborhood streets around John Paul II Catholic School, near Briar Forest Road and Highway 6. Parking is available on streets around the school.

This 5K event allows our community to demonstrate extraordinary strength and camaraderie. Everyone is welcome to come and participate in the 5K by running, walking and volunteering on November 2nd, so please invite your friends. To learn more and register, visit www.runwiththesaints.com.
